LWMA Kids: Telling the Truth.

The theme for this week’s class is “Telling the Truth”:  Often times the only time children get reminded that they should tell the truth is when they are “caught” doing something they shouldn’t.  If you really want to install into children the proper discipline in being honest, even when things go bad, you should talk to the with your child when things are going good.  This will associate the telling the truth with a good time rather than just a time when they are in trouble.   Children understand that sometimes thing go wrong, but by reinforcing in them that honesty will lessen any type of potential punishment they may have, they will be more inclined to tell the truth with less coercion you would normally require.

LWMA Training: "Walking" Push-Ups

A Little late posting this, but here is our exercise for this week:  “Walking” push-ups.  Find something to elevate your feet 1 to 2 feet off the ground.  Assume to push-up position with your hands on the ground and your feet placed firmly on your base.  Start walking your hands back toward you feet letting your knees bend as you do so.  Once your hands are as far back as they can go reverse direction and start walking them back out to push-up position again. Try to get into an even pace of walking in and out; you can start with a short time of 1 min but slowly increase to maintaining the walking motion for up to 5 min.

A great way to build your shoulders and increase your ability to handle muscle fatigue.

LWMA Kids: Finish what you start.

LWMA Kids: The theme for this week’s kid’s class is “finishing what you start.” Everything from homework to small craft projects kids often find it hard to stay focused long enough to get something done. It’s important to remind a kid that while sometimes things can get hard the true reward comes in finishing a project and finishing it well.

It’s always good to reward children for their hard work. Here at LWMA children will see their hard work rewarded through strips on their belt; at home you can work to reward your children in other ways, maybe some extra play time with a friend, a special trip to one of their favorite locations, or occasionally just that favorite treat they have been wanting so badly.

LWMA Kids: Homework!

The theme for this week is Homework!  Homework is never easy but there are things that we can do to help make it better.  Make sure to limit the amount of distraction children have while doing their work; while it’s their (children’s) work, parents should remain interested in the assignments their kids are doing, help them out by finding out what they have to do each night, check on them from time to time while hey work and remember to help them double check all work! We also recommend that any weekend homework gets finished FRIDAY night so that both parents and kids have the weekend to enjoy being a family!

LWMA Training: Tabata Variations

Don’t have room at home to do a full Tabata sprint? Here are some other exercises that can be done in place of the sprint using the same Tabata method (20 sec high intensity followed by 10 sec rest for 8 cycles): Jump rope, punching heavy bag, kicking heavy bag, pushups, running in place, or squats.  Don’t let the lack of room keep you from training!

Monday, February 14, 2011

LWMA Kids: Cleaning Up!

The theme for this week’s kid’s class is “Cleaning Up”.  Everything for cleaning their rooms, to just picking a jacket up off the floor, kids always need help in remember that the better you take care of something the longer it lasts.  Parents should remember that while it’s a constant battle to get kids to stay neat, it is a lesson that will eventually stay with their child into adult hood and will always serve them well.  Kids should work extra hard this week to get those rooms clean and show that they are listening!

LWMA Training:

Switching Split Squats

1. Start with one leg forward and one leg back, making sure to keep your front shin vertical and the back leg up on the ball of the foot.

2. Lower your body straight down till just above the floor stopping the knee short of touching, pause shortly.

3. Pushing back up toward the start position, slightly jump and switch your feet landing lightly into the original start position, repeat steps from #1.
A great exercise to build up strong legs and the explosive power needed for everything from kicking to throwing.

LWMA Kids:

This week is about positive attitude.

In martial arts we often present kids with challenges so that they can learn that hard work gains the rewards. While it can sometimes be frustrating, kids that maintain the attitude of “I can accomplish anything as long as I keep trying” will succeed in the end. This positive attitude is something that carries over from the martial arts class room in to their day-to-day lives. When you kids struggle in school or home activities it’s important to remember to not let them quit, but instead to continue to work on the problem with a positive attitude until they succeed.
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” - Winston Churchill

LWMA Kids

The theme for classes this week is: Responding Properly.

When talking to adults it always a good idea for children to maintain a more formal conversation.  Instead of just saying “yes” or “no” they should phrase their responses with an honorific: “Yes mom”, “Yes dad”, “Yes Mr. Mecoy.”… and so on.  This lets children show their proper respect and will gain them respect for such subtle but good behavior.

Training

Clapping Pushups

A great way to build punching power and increase explosive strength is to train clapping pushups. Remember that clapping your hands is not actually necessary, but getting your hand off the floor is.
1. Start in a normal pushup position, remember to keep you spine aliened.
2. Pushup as explosively as possible.
3. Catch yourself just before you hit the ground and lower yourself back to the starting position.

8 to 10 pushups per set with 3 sets will add quickly to your punching power goals!

LWMA Kids: This week in the kid’s class we will be placing extra emphasis on FOCUS.  Help your kids focus at home by making sure they look at you when you are talking to them, eye contact is an important part of maintaining a kids focus in any activity.
